About the DIY wiring planner

This free wiring planner turns a room layout into an electrical plan. Choose a room size and shape, add doors and windows, then place outlets, switches and lights on the walls and ceiling. It works out a short, sensible cable run for each circuit and draws a wiring diagram for every box, showing which wire goes to which screw, plus plain-English build steps and a list of what to buy.

How to use it

  1. Set your room size and shape, and drag the doors and windows into place.
  2. Add outlets, switches and lights. Drag them to move them, and choose which device feeds which if you want a different order.
  3. Click any device for its diagram and steps, or print the whole plan.

The planner follows typical US 120 V household wiring with NM-B cable: 15 A circuits with 14 AWG and 20 A circuits with 12 AWG. It is a planning aid, not a code check, so follow your local electrical code and get permits and inspections where required.
